With the sun shining brightly, a breeze wafting off the Buffalo River and the smell of Cheerios perfuming the air, the area’s newest waterfront park was officially opened Thursday.
Workers were still installing the last stretch of cement sidewalk along Ohio Street near Michigan Avenue as a crowd of several hundred people gathered to hear Margaret “Peg” Overdorf, executive director of the Valley Community Association, thank those who helped create the 2.5-acre Buffalo River Fest Park.
“This journey has been about partnerships, and we have many — you know I am not afraid to ask for help,” Overdorf said as she praised the staff and board members at the Valley Community Association. In its first phase, the park boasts a boardwalk along the water, five docks served by a temporary gangway, a dozen metal benches, a pergola, trees, flowers and a brick band shell.
Overdorf said the design for the second phase of the park will begin in July, and construction is scheduled to start in January on a two-story lodge with a restaurant.

Jason Bay, the hitter struggling with the contract of 66 million, was joined by manager Terry Collins as he sat down to eat hours before the Mets played the Atlanta Braves in the night from Saturday to Citi Field. Collins had a quick piece of news that was not difficult to digest for the Bay: He was demoted.
Name Bay was slipped into the slot No. 6 in which the batting order was posted outside the Mets' clubhouse. Bay, who hit the fourth or fifth in 34 of the 36 games he played this season, Collins did not dispute.
"I said, 'I do not blame you, and that's it," he said before batting practice Bay.
Bay entered Saturday batting .223 with two homers and 10 RBIs. He hit .185 in the first eight games of this homestand and had no hits in his last 13 at-bats. Bay had not hit a home run since May 13, a duration of 62 at-bats. These are not figures of a cleanup hitter....

It’s been one of those days. I used to like listening to that song whenever I was done with a particularly bad shift at Mickey Dee’s way back when. I am slightly irked that the video looks & sounds like whoever uploaded it did so by videotaping his TV, but I could be wrong. Either way, it fits my mood. Sort of feeling beaten down, neglected, etc. But like the song says, I won’t let the bastards grind me down! Plus, it helps that it’s ska, and I’m never in a bad mood whenever I listen to ska.
My hacking cough last night had me waking up just about every hour & a half to two hours. I went to bed at 10:30, was up at midnight, then again around 3, and then the alarm went off at 5. I stayed busy though–Our statements showed up today, so I had those to sort. And for whatever reason, the phone rang off the hook today. No matter. I hopefully will get some decent sleep tonight. Jay & I both desperately need it. He ended up sleeping on the couch because of my hacking up a lung.
