It's not the loss of back pressure that causes an open exhaust to have an apparent loss of power, it's the loss of exhaust gas velocity when you go to a larger diameter pipe and the flow slows. Smaller pipe= higher velocity at lower RPM= more power at lower RPM, larger pipe = higher velocity at...

Harleys at Indy

ELKHART LAKE, WI, JUNE 4 - The distinctive rumble of the Vance and Hines XR1200 series is heading to the Brickyard as a support class for the 2011 Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix.

As reported in CycleNews.com this past Tuesday, the Vance & Hines XR1200 class will be added as a support race to the MotoGP World Championship at famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It was announced by AMA Pro Racing CEO David Atlas at Friday's riders meeting here at Road America and confirmed a day later with press releases from the various parties.

The Harleys will have two races, one Saturday and one Sunday, and will also have a dedicated two-day test the week prior to the August 26-28 12th round of the MotoGP World Championship. The races will serve as the ninth of ten rounds of the XR1200 championship. The winner for each race will earn $3500.

"It came about as a result of everybody involved, meaning Harley, IMS, AMA, Vance & Hines, all wanting it to happen and it makes a lot of sense, because the Speedway wants to add attractions that make it a nice event, so I think that's what made this whole thing work is the situation where you say, 'OK, what value can I add for the consumer here?" Vance & Hines' Terry Vance said. "How can we get more people and where are they? Well, there's a lot of Harley guys that aren't showing up; how do we get them here?

Several riders took turns at the head of the lead pack, including Danny Eslick (Bruce Rossmeyer's Daytona Racing), Michael Barnes (Drag Specialties), Steve Rapp (Parts Unlimited), and Fillmore. Other riders in the mix included Travis Wyman (Harv's Harley-Davidson), Michael Beck (J&P Cycles), and Shawn Higbee (WFO Racing), with riders swapping the lead sometimes several times per lap as they drafted and outbraked each other on the 4-mile track's three long straights. As the final lap approached, riders planned their strategies for the run up to the checkered flag out of Canada Corner, the penultimate corner of the 14-turn course.

"The Harleys push a pretty big hole in the air, and if you're the fourth or fifth guy in line you can get a pretty good head of steam. Generally somebody would pass me back going into Canada Corner, which is perfect. That's what I was hoping for the last lap and it just didn't work out," said Eslick, who eased up enough to allow Fillmore to pass but couldn't make the gap back up in the run up to the finish line. "The draft was a huge part of the race today, and Chris definitely outsmarted me on that one....
